Something is happening in AEO that the tools have not caught up to yet.

Practitioners experimenting with answer engine optimization — running their own tests, tracking their own results, comparing notes across communities — are independently landing on the same insight. On-page optimization is necessary but not sufficient. The structure of your content determines whether AI can extract it. But something else determines whether AI considers your domain a credible source in the first place.

That distinction is showing up repeatedly in practitioner observations. And it matters more than most AEO guidance acknowledges.

What The Data Already Shows

21%
Reddit’s share of Google AI Overview citations

Confirmed across Adweek’s January 2026 analysis, Surfer SEO’s study of 46 million citations, and Profound’s analysis of 680 million citations. YouTube runs between 18 and 23 percent depending on methodology.

These numbers are not about Reddit and YouTube having better content than anyone else. They are about Reddit and YouTube being domains that AI systems have already established high trust in — domains with enormous link graphs, consistent historical signals, and continuous external corroboration. When AI systems evaluate which sources to cite, trust infrastructure comes before content quality.

That is the mechanism most AEO practitioners are discovering empirically, without a framework to explain it.

The Insight Practitioners Keep Reaching

Read enough practitioner accounts of what is actually moving the needle in AEO and a pattern emerges. The on-page work — breaking content into independently useful sections, leading with the direct answer, structuring headings as literal questions — is real and it matters. But practitioners who go deeper keep bumping into the same wall.

The wall is verifiability.

One observation surfaces consistently: being mentioned consistently across forums, publications, directories, and review platforms produces better results than a perfectly optimized site with no external corroboration. Another: entity consistency across every platform a brand exists on — making sure the description of who you are and what you do is identical everywhere — appears to have an outsized effect relative to the effort required.

On-page structure decides whether a passage is easy to pull once a model already trusts your site. It does not decide whether the model treats your site as a candidate source in the first place.

What The Tools Are Not Measuring

The AEO tool market is built to measure citations. Citation share, prompt rankings, brand mention frequency, AI visibility scores. These are useful measurements — they tell you what is happening. They do not tell you why.

A domain that AI systems do not trust produces a particular result in citation tracking tools: absence. Not low rankings. Not poor performance. Just absence. The tool shows nothing because the domain is not being considered as a source.

The infrastructure signals that determine whether a domain gets considered are not visible in citation trackers. Whether your email authentication is correctly configured. Whether your domain registration history signals stability. Whether your network graph places you in a cluster of authoritative sources or in relative isolation. Whether any threat intelligence provider has flagged your domain.

These are the signals that determine whether you are in the consideration set before any citation tracking begins. And no tool currently being sold as an AEO solution measures them.

The Foundation Before The Framework

Practitioners figuring out AEO by trial and error are discovering the trust layer empirically. The observation keeps recurring because the underlying dynamic is real — AI systems evaluate source credibility before they evaluate content quality.

The implication is straightforward. AEO is not primarily a content optimization problem. It is a trust infrastructure problem that content optimization builds on top of. Getting the infrastructure right does not guarantee citations. Getting it wrong makes every other optimization effort less effective.

The practitioners who are seeing results from chunking content, leading with direct answers, and maintaining consistent entity signals are doing the right work. What they have not yet had is a way to check whether the foundation those efforts are building on is sound.
